Rehabilitation of the Al-Hashash Well in Rafah to Secure Water Supplies for Residents
As part of efforts to rehabilitate infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, CMWU, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, completed maintenance works on the Al-Hashash well in Rafah city, after it was destroyed as a result of Israeli bombardment that targeted most of the water and sanitation facilities in the city.
The maintenance works included replacing the well's manifold, and preparing it to pump water again, ensuring the continued supply of usable water to citizens. The Al-Hashash well is one of the main water sources in Rafah, relied upon by a large number of residents to obtain water, particularly amid the difficult humanitarian conditions the city is experiencing. The well has a production capacity of about 70 cubic meters per hour and serves about 20,000 people, and is a water source for the Turkish Mirage reservoir, in addition to serving residents of the Al-Hashash neighborhood area.
CMWU's technical crews also repaired the water networks surrounding the well, which had sustained significant damage during the war, ensuring water flows effectively to neighboring residential neighborhoods and improving the distribution process.
CMWU affirmed that these efforts are part of its ongoing endeavors, in cooperation with international institutions, to rehabilitate damaged water facilities, and ensure water reaches all citizens. It also called on the international community to intensify its support for rebuilding the essential infrastructure that sustained severe damage during the war.
