Wadi Gaza Rehabilitation Project.

CMWU in cooperation with Ministry of Local Governorate launched Wadi Gaza Rehabilitation project which is funded by the German Government through KFW with a total budget of 2 million Euros. The project will be supervised by the German consultant Dorsch and the Project Management Unit (PMU) and implement by a local contractor - Masoud & Ali Company. The project is planned to be completed within 9 months.
Engineer Farid Ashour, the project Management Unit Director for Gaza Central sewerage Project at CMWU, mentioned that the project will be implemented in two stages:
The first stage will take 3 months, through which the Wadi will be cleaned by removing the existing solid waste and the bulk concrete debris within the Wadi bed, and eliminating all existing sewage ponds by backfilling with suitable soil. Also, a main channel will be created within the Wadi bed that will be sufficient for the flow of the treated sewage in the future advanced stages of the plant. In this stage 60,000 cubic meters of treated sewage will flow from the eastern border of Bureij refugee camp to the far west Wadi Bridge on the sea side.
The second stage will take 6 months to finish the concrete structure works to construct the crossings to facilitate the movement of residents between the two banks of the wadi.
Engineer Ashour Added that the project will include connecting UNRWA and Al Mughraga sewage pump stations (SPS) to the electrical network at the central wastewater treatment plant , where electricity is produced by generators relies on natural gas in addition to solar energy in order to ensure the continuity of electricity supply to the SPS and avoid any possibility of stopping the SPS.
Ashour also Added that the project includes eliminating the sewage outfalls from the neighboring houses to the wadi and finding alternative solution for them.
Engineer Ashour stressed that this project should be completed before running the central wastewater treatment plant east Bureij in order to discharge the treated sewage from the central treatment plant down to the Wadi.
Finally, Ashour pointed out the strategic importance of the project in the revitalization of Wadi Gaza as a natural reservation , where the continuous flow of treated sewage in the Wadi will contribute in providing an environment suitable for the growth of plants and wild bushes on both sides of the valley as well improve the life condition for the surrounding neighborhood.
